really good. really bad.

In the spirit of the awards shows, I present to you, a sampling of some of the winning things I've been given, or found and bought for Lola. The one loser item is, of course, at the end.

1. This is a fantastic "starter" bib that I received as a gift from Mindy. Made by iplay and called the Drip Drop, this bib has an ingenious soft and absorbent collar that fits snugly by way of a velcro fastener.
well worn and stained, but much loved

2. Mum2Mum Wonderbibs. Super absorbent and leak resistant backing, adjustable snap collar to accommodate growing chub! I can wrangle this bib on single-handedly even when Lola is doing her best ants in the pants or stiff baby routines.

3. Honey Bunny socks. Scott happened upon these at the local Rite Aid of all places, and let me tell you, these socks rock. They are inexpensive, stay on and are warm - end of story. She's outgrown them already and I can't find them in larger sizes.

they come in a variety of colors, both striped and solid

4. Prop-O's Head Support. Got this item at One Step Ahead. These car seat strap covers are so soft and keep Lola's head from falling to the side or forward when she inevitably falls asleep.

and look - she's wearing the socks!

5. aden + anais muslin baby wraps. These wonderful swaddlers and wraps initially came to us by way of a gift from Scott's cousin's wife, Melanie. She raved. I rave. They are soft and just get softer as they are washed. They are very generously sized, but stretch for a nice snug swaddle. I just bought their newest line of "cozy collection" wraps and love these as much as their original version.

just the best

And finally, what list of winners would shine as brightly without the loser at the end??

Back in August, Scott and I undertook the making of a belly cast from a company called The Original Belly Works. We had all sorts of romantic, flowery thoughts about designing it and displaying it in the nursery and happily sent the rough cast to their Atlanta, GA studio for completion.

Well, that was then, this is now - 5 months, two versions and a complaint or two later and I have made it my mission to dissuade anyone who might consider this a great idea to abandon it.

In a nutshell [a big one], after a break-in and a trade show, the first version of the belly [#1, below] wasn't completed until the end of November and it was horribly done, nothing at all like the sharp examples shown on their site. I was so disappointed and ended up asking them to remove the image and send it back to me so that I could do the artwork myself.

The owner asked if they could have another opportunity to get it right by putting their most "seasoned designer" on the project, to which I agreed while wondering why they would not have had this person do it the first time.

Version #2 was done by 12/11. I liked it very much and was so happy to be that much closer to having it back.
The finished, fiber glassed belly finally arrived on January 4th and on January 15th Scott prepped the wall to mount it.

It looked beautiful! For 15 minutes.

One of the anchors that held the hanging wire on the back came off and down came the belly. A small piece broke off of the very bottom and there is a crack under the belly.
The end of the story - I immediately made the owner aware via email [because the shop was closed]. Still haven't heard from her.

Don't do it!!!!

QTip Overboard!

Truly, the wild onslaught of hormones during pregnancy and the "leveling out" of those same afterward, is an experience not for the fearful - or Q-tips.

Once I hit the 4 month post partum mark, my hair began falling out in CLUMPS... in HANDFULS. Enough to clog the shower drain. I'm now closer to 5 months and the hair loss seems to be calming down, but I wash and brush it less.

Anyhow, the incident above struck me as darkly funny. I pictured wildebeest at the watering hole that was teeming with crocodiles. A twisted take on a Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom moment.

Lola chomping on Mortimer Moose

Auntie Meaghan gave Lola a gift recently, Mortimer Moose. Lola plays with him most days and seems to have an affinity for chewing on the antlers. We don't think she's teething yet but as her dexterity improves it seems everything is destined to be tasted.

Lola's first taste of cereal

Lately Lola's appetite has been increasing noticeably, it seems we're always coming up on another feeding. We decided to give her a little cereal with her bottles to help fill her up. Here's a video of her first taste of cereal:

Christmas in Massachussets

12-31-09
On New Years Eve we headed into Boston once again to visit my cousin Matt, his wife Melanie, and their two year old son Jake. The city was lit up for the First Night celebration and it looked like a postcard with the fresh snow, lights, and the throngs of people walking all over town.

It was a treat meeting Jake for the first time, very tall, blonde, handsome and full of energy, wanting to play and wrestle with his dad. The adults got caught up with each other and the goings on with the family as well as sharing tales of pregnancies and births.

We really enjoyed the visit and hope to see Matt's parents, Aunt Kathy and Uncle Ivan on our next trip north.

A much anticipated trip to Boston to meet up with Tom, Mindy and their son Jackson, who was born seven months before Lola. It had to be one of the coldest, windiest days of the entire trip but we all stayed warm within the lovely, temperature controlled environs of Copley Place and the Prudential Center.

Jackson Blossom

After hugs and getting babies fed, we all promptly got into mutual child admiration mode. Jackson is very handsome and was full of smiles and walking with assistance from the nearby furniture. Mindy and Maggie swapped babies and we passed some time comparing and catching up.

We then ventured into the Prudential Center for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. Lola napped on Maggie and I got to play with Jack and his cheerios - what a bundle of personality! We ate, talked and laughed and then it was time to brave the cold again. Maggie was thrilled to have been able to spend time with Mindy and wasted no time in talking up our next visit out West.

Christmas Greetings from Massachusetts! We've had a busy time visiting family and friends and dodging the cold. Our first stop was with the Aunties, Bea and Leo, on Christmas Day. We got to see cousins Mikaela and Jaedin briefly, but Jaedin was too quick for our camera.

We had a nice visit - Lola was wearing her winter dress, and then tried on her special Santa dress from her aunties.
